Who we are:
Smoke-Free Mohawk Valley is a Community Partner of the New York State Department of Health Tobacco Control Program, and is funded by a grant from the New York State Department of Health.  We are dedicated to preventing the onset of tobacco use among children and youth and aid in the elimination of tobacco as a public health problem in Oneida and Herkimer Counties.

As part of the Tobacco Control Program (TCP) we work to prevent the initiation of tobacco use among youth and young adults, promote quitting among current smokers, decrease the social acceptability of tobacco use, and eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke.  We pursue these goals through community education and mobilization, by conducting media and counter-marketing campaigns, and promoting state wide initiatives.

Smoke-Free Mohawk Valley upholds the TCP vision and mission that all New Yorkers have the right to live in a tobacco free society.  We will do our part to reduce morbidity and mortality and alleviate social and economic burden caused by tobacco use in New York State.

What we do:
As part of a Statewide Initiative, SFMV aims to rid our community of Advertising, Sponsorship, and Promotion of tobacco products.  This program applies standard community mobilization and social change strategies to counter, reduce and eliminate the tobacco company marketing that serves to lure new smokers into deadly dependence and reinforce the smoker’s addiction to a deadly product.

SFMV is able to provide educational material to healthcare professionals, schools, and businesses that implement tobacco control programs.  SFMV also holds a lending library with tools, educational materials and displays that can be borrowed for up to one week.

Secondhand smoke is harmful and hazardous to the health of the general public and particularly dangerous to children.  SFMV aims to reduce the exposure to secondhand smoke by providing materials and decals to help keep your home and vehicle smoke-free.  Please contact us for information on how to obtain these materials and decals.  These are also available for businesses as well.
